The Frederick Douglass Gala is our signature annual fundraising event to inspire, observe, and appreciate urban excellence. We celebrate at-promise youth pursuing their dreams and achieving greatness, while recognizing true OGs that stand with US to empower youth and stop senseless violence.

Promoting the best of what we see in our children, we believe they can excel regardless of their zip code or environment. Join US to propel the success of youth and stop senseless violence. We need leaders and partners like you!

Skye Turner

Born in Dallas, Texas, Skye is a natural in front of an audience through speaking, acting, and singing. She is a straight A student, debater with the Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Debate Team, and a participant in various speaking competitions, including the 2018 Gardere MLK Oratory competition. She is a member of the Charles Rice Learning Center Honor Choir and the Dallas Metroplex Musicians Association Jr Division. Skye was selected to lead performances at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Inc. (TBAAL) Summer Arts Institute singing Purple Rain in the closing performance in 2017 at age 8 and Patti Labelle’s “If Only You Knew” which became a viral sensation in a matter of days at age 9. Skye takes piano and voice lessons and hopes to one day become a professional singer.

The Frederick Douglass Society was created to cultivate the core strengths and talents present within youth who exhibit considerable potential for success. The society is comprised of students ranging from the age of 8-18 who are selected based upon merit exemplified in academics, attitude and other achievements.

These young ambassadors engage in a series of intentionally designed workshops and hands-on learning experiences that are built upon the attributes of Frederick Douglass to include self-awareness, leadership, civic responsibility, and oratory excellence, to name a few. The Frederick Douglass Society is committed to awakening the leadership potential within youth and activating them through increased opportunities of citizenship.
